It was built to commemorate the last king of the Singosari dynasty, Kertanagara, who died when his palace was captured by usurpers in 1292. This temple is renowned for its unique architectural style and exquisite sculptures, although it seems to have never been fully completed. The roof is decorated with highly detailed "Kara" portraits, which are symbols of time and destruction in Hinduism.
